Event Details

The Lied Public Library in Clarinda is delighted to announce a special program on the UN Commission on the Status of Women, featuring local resident Kathleen Keefer. This educational event will take place on Monday, November 20th, 2023, at 6:30 PM at the Lied Public Library.

The Commission on the Status of Women, an essential body within the United Nations, has played a pivotal role in advancing the rights and equality of women on a global scale. Since its inaugural meeting in Lake Success, New York, in February 1947, the Commission has been dedicated to establishing standards, creating international conventions, and raising awareness about women's issues. Notably, they drafted the 1953 Convention on the Political Rights of Women, the first international legal instrument recognizing and safeguarding women's political rights. In the following years, the Commission has adopted numerous declarations and conventions to promote gender equality. This program will delve into the history of the Commission and its significant impact on the world.

Kathleen Keefer, a member of the Clarinda community, has been actively involved in various local programs and events since her residency in 2005. In 2019, she was named a delegate to the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in New York City, and she has continued to serve in this role annually. Kathleen is also the Vice Moderator for Presbyterian Women in the PC(USA) National Office and the Moderator for the Justice & Peace Committee for PW National. She remains committed to working with the Presbyterian Ministry at the UN and Ecumenical Women at the UN.
