Lied Public Library is thrilled to announce a Virtual Author Visit with Erika Howsare, renowned author of "The Age of Deer." The event is scheduled for Monday, March 4th, at 6:30 PM, offering an enriching experience both in-person at the library and online via Zoom.

"The Age of Deer" is a masterful hybrid of nature writing and cultural studies, delving into the intricate connection between humans and deer. Erika Howsare, armed with an MFA in literary arts from Brown University, takes readers on a captivating journey from mythology to biology, exploring our complex relationship with deer across diverse landscapes—from forests to cities.

Deer have played a vital role in the human experience for centuries, surviving and thriving in our shared environment. In the 21st century, this relationship is marked by contradictions—hunting and protection, coexistence and extermination, victims and pests. Howsare's exploration goes beyond the surface, examining historical roots and contemporary expressions of our attitudes towards deer.

Throughout the book, Howsare shares compelling stories: scientists capturing and collaring fawns, hunters showcasing their trophies, a museum interpreter teaching American history while tanning a deer hide, an animal-control officer collecting deer carcasses, and a woman nurturing orphaned fawns. These narratives serve as a lens through which readers can contemplate the paradoxes of human interaction with the natural world.

Erika Howsare, a native of Pennsylvania now residing in rural Virginia, brings a unique perspective to the discussion. Having worked in local journalism for two decades, covering culture and environmental issues, she enriches "The Age of Deer" with insights drawn from a diverse range of experiences.

The Virtual Author Visit is free and open to the public. Attendees can join either in person at the Lied Public Library in Clarinda or virtually via Zoom. The event promises to be an engaging exploration of the intricate relationship between humans and deer, offering a perspective that is both intimate and thought-provoking.
